Beat the Heat This Scorching Summer

In the News by FiveBites 👋

Get your swimming gear ready as we face a scorchingly hot summer this year. Hopefully, you’ll be swimming in a pool or at the beach instead of in your own sweat 😬 Sorry for putting that idea in your head, let’s dive into beating the heat - no pun intended.

Camarines Sur, alongside other regions in the Philippines, is experiencing scorching heat with a heat index reaching 41 degrees Celsius, prompting health concerns. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warns of further temperature rises, especially as the monsoon break approaches. To combat heat-related illnesses, the public is advised to avoid outdoor activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

From PAGASA as of 07 April 2024

Here are the five best methods to prevent health issues during high temperatures:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regularly throughout the day, and more so if you’ll be outdoors.

Seek Shade: Limit direct exposure to sunlight by staying indoors or seeking shade.

Wear Appropriate Clothing: Dress in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable materials like cotton.

Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed skin, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, and hats to protect your face from harmful UV rays. Maybe now is the time to bring around that umbrella you may have kept forgetting about.

Take Regular Breaks: If you have to be outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas to rest and cool down. Avoid strenuous physical activity during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

As we gear up for the summer ahead, let's keep cool, stay hydrated, and prioritize our well-being. Remember, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to serious health risks like dehydration and heatstroke. So, let's make smart choices, stay safe, and enjoy all the fun and sun that summer brings!
