In the News by FiveBites 👋🏻
What Happened to Killua?
Killua, a three-year-old Golden Retriever, was tragically killed under disputed circumstances in Barangay Sta. Cruz of Bato, Camarines Sur. The suspect, Anthony Solares claimed self-defense, alleging that Killua had attacked a passerby.
The owner, Vina Rachelle Arazas, discovered Killua missing early on March 17 and later learned through CCTV footage, that the dog that was running away from the suspect, was hit several times.
Killua was later found in a sack, lifeless.
The Stark Reality of Animal Cruelty in the Philippines
The outrage over Killua's killing has reignited discussions on animal cruelty in the Philippines, a country that reported a staggering 3,000 cases in 2020 alone, according to Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) Welfare Philippines.
What are the different forms of Animal Cruelty?
Animal cruelty encompasses a wide range of harmful actions against animals, which are recognized as punishable offenses under Philippine law to protect animal welfare.

The various forms of animal cruelty include:
Physical Abuse
Inflicting harm through beating, burning, or mutilating, leading to unnecessary pain.
Neglect
Failing to provide essential necessities such as food, water, and shelter, resulting in prolonged suffering.
Confinement and Restraint
Subjecting animals to confined or unsanitary environments, impairing their health.
Transportation
Transporting animals in conditions that are overcrowded or unsafe, causing stress, injuries, or mortality.
Exploitation and Entertainment
Utilizing animals for entertainment or combat, inducing stress and physical harm.
Medical and Scientific Research
Performing experiments on animals without ethical considerations, neglecting their welfare.
Illegal Trade and Trafficking
Participating in the unlawful commerce of protected species, leading to harm or death during transit.
The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 prohibits animal cruelty and offenders may face imprisonment of up to two years and fines ranging from ₱5,000 to ₱100,000, depending on the severity of the offense.
Consequently, Sen. Grace Poe introduced Senate Bill 2458, advocating for mandatory animal welfare education in schools and creating a barangay animal welfare task force.
Advocacy and Awareness
Organizations such as the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), along with lawmakers, have underscored the critical need to elevate awareness around animal welfare legislation and to strengthen the enforcement capabilities of local government bodies.
Despite the distressing rise in cases of animal cruelty within the Philippines, it's noteworthy that the nation leads in domestic animal companionship, with an impressive 67% of households owning dogs. This statistic reflects a deep-seated affection and care for our four-legged friends. It serves as a compelling call to action: let's safeguard the well-being of these animals.
We must stand as their protectors, not the source of their distress.
