Be Smart, Set SMART Goals ☝️
Get Ahead by FiveBites 👋🏻
Picture this: you're standing at the foot of a mountain, eyeing its peak in awe, thinking about how you’re going to get to the top. You’re full of ambition and motivation as you’re set to ascend it. As you climb, you realize how complex it is—it’s steeper, more physically taxing, overall daunting. Your body starts to cave in, you grow weaker, tired, weary, and doubt fills your mind. Despite doing your best, you’re unable to reach the summit and accept defeat.
That’s what happens when we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves, way beyond our current capacity. It’s easy to imagine the finish line, the glory of victory, but sometimes we forget how difficult the journey may be. It shouldn’t discourage us from attempting a climb, but to tweak it to make the journey more realistic.
So how do we set goals that are attainable without straining ourselves?
A solution is SMART goals.
The acronym SMART stands for:
Specific: Goals should be clear, concise, and focused on a specific outcome. Instead of a vague goal like "get healthier," a specific goal would be "exercise for 30 minutes five days a week."
Measurable: Goals should include criteria for measuring progress and success. This allows you to track your achievements and stay motivated. For example, if your goal is to save money, you could set a measurable target of saving $500 per month.
Achievable: Goals should be realistic and attainable given your resources and circumstances. Setting overly ambitious goals can lead to frustration and burnout. It's important to set goals that stretch you but are still within reach with effort and commitment.
Relevant: Goals should be aligned with your values, priorities, and long-term objectives. They should be meaningful and relevant to your personal or professional growth. Ask yourself why the goal matters to you and how it fits into your broader aspirations.
Time-bound: Goals should have a defined timeframe or deadline for completion. This creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused on making progress. Setting deadlines can prevent procrastination and ensure that you stay on track toward achieving your goal.
Let's apply this with two practical examples:
Example 1: Losing 10 lbs in 3 Months
Specific: Lose 10 lbs by combining a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Measurable: Track calories and aim for a 500-calorie deficit daily.
Achievable: Eat homemade Filipino meals low in calories and stay active with basketball, Zumba, or jogging.
Relevant: Boost health, confidence, and energy.
Time-bound: Lose about 1 lb a week, reaching your goal in 3 months.
Example 2: Saving for a New Phone
Specific: Save PHP 15,000 in 4 months for a new smartphone.
Measurable: Save PHP 3,750 each month.
Achievable: Cut back on extras like snacks and subscriptions. Save any extra cash from part-time jobs.
Relevant: A new phone for better performance and staying connected.
Time-bound: 4 months to hit your goal.
Be sure to develop a detailed plan and monitor your progress. You can adjust your approach as you go. By setting SMART goals, you can turn inefficient plans into actionable strategies that lead to tangible results.
With proper goals set, and consistency - you can conquer any mountain!
